Airswift is working with one of our major clients to find an Intermediate Cost Controller to join their team in Toronto, ON. This is a 1 year contract, with possibility of being extended, to work on a Monday to Friday (at the office) schedule.
This role will appeal to a collaborative individual, motivated to play a role in taking the company through its next phase of growth and development. Reporting to the Group Manager, Eastern Canada, and based in the Toronto Corporate Office, the Cost Controller will be responsible for supporting various clients in managing cost controls and other various project controls functions for our global Clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain an effective and professional relationship with all suppliers, including regular in-person meetings with critical stakeholders
- Establish and track budget values for all open purchase orders, contracts, scopes of work and change orders.
- Implement Standard Operating Procedures for budget establishment, authorization for expenditure, project change notices, forecasting, percent complete calculation, and earned value determination.
- Measures overall Schedule Performance Index and Cost Performance Index for all active projects and tracks these using S-Curves and other reporting tools.
- Prepare monthly status reports, cost variance reporting, forecasts, budget updates, change control notices, and monthly presentations to project management using established templates.
- Prepare regular flash reports and presentations with appropriate analysis to internal and external stakeholders.
- Collaborate with procurement, finance, and operations teams to ensure cost efficiency and budget adherence.
- Conduct financial risk analysis and develop mitigation strategies.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, industry regulations, and financial reporting standards.
- Support contract negotiations and cost estimations for new projects.
- Develop cost-saving initiatives and continuous improvement strategies to enhance operational efficiency.
- Willing to work under tight deadlines and maintain exceptional judgment and discretion regarding sensitive matters.
- Plan and manage internal and external project communications, ensuring effective exchange of project information and deliverables and identify, analyze, prioritize, mitigate and communicate project risks.
- Project coordination.
- Actively mentor junior team members on cost management basics.
- Support the development of training materials.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong written communication skills including document creation, preparation, editing and overall document management using the Microsoft Office Suite, with specific expertise in the formatting, referencing and linking of documents using Microsoft Word preferred.
- Strong verbal communication and presentation skills.
- Strong computer skills in Windows, Adobe, and the Microsoft Office Suite of tools.
- Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to work proactively in a small team, multi-disciplinary environment.
- Must be results-oriented and able to prioritize and focus on key deliverables with an ability to meet tight deadlines.
- Ability to logically plan, organize, and structure activities.

Experience, Qualifications & Education
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Engineering, or a related field (CPA, CMA, or equivalent certification is an asset).
- Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in cost control, financial analysis, or project controls within the mining, oil & gas, or heavy industry sectors.
- Strong knowledge of cost control methodologies, budgeting, and financial forecasting.
- Proficiency in ERP systems, cost management software, and Microsoft Excel.
- Experience in cost controls, estimating, budgeting, and/or accounting would be an asset.
- Software training in Aconex, SAP (or other ERP System), Primavera P6, and/or @RISK would be an asset.
- Experience in database or document control software would be an asset.
- Previous experience acting as an Owner’s representative would be an asset.
- Bilingual French/English would be an asset.
