The Process Control Engineer has the principal plant responsibility for the monitoring and improvement of unit process control. The position also performs the control portion of project engineering as directed.

Prioritized Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for system administration, system management, integrity and health of the plant Distributed Control System
  • Understand and support control strategies, shutdowns, interlocks, alarm management and man/machine interface applications. Assists with troubleshooting efforts of control related process problems.
  • Apply knowledge of process and critical operating parameters utilizing plant systems and resources to propose and implement control strategies that improve safety, quality, process efficiency and profitability.
  • Design and implement process control projects. Assist IE&A technicians with commissioning and startup. Provide necessary end-user Training for new projects and control changes to ensure proper understanding and implementation.
  • Ensure information systems are updated with Distributed Control System changes to facilitate operations and management decisions.
  • Provide management information and recommendations on evolving technologies. Upgrade process control systems as necessary.
  • Actively support the Continuous Improvement Process as related to Process Control initiatives.
  • Document system and control changes in accordance with current procedures and practices of the Process Control group.
  • Provide process control expertise and process knowledge for the PHA (process hazard analysis) studies to ensure all safeguards are accurate and active. Ensure IPLs (independent layers of protection are thoroughly documented.
  • Collaborate with Digital and Manufacturing teams for the secure integration of Operational Technology (OT) and Informational Technology (IT) systems, ensuring seamless operation and security.
  • Work with external vendors and partners to ensure their services and products meet our cybersecurity standards for OT systems.
  • Utilize advanced monitoring tools and techniques to detect and respond to potential cyber threats in real-time
  • Configure and manage network switches and firewalls to secure and optimize industrial networks.
  • Conduct alarm rationalization to minimize nuisance alarms and ensure critical alarms are prioritized.
  • Perform system diagnostics and troubleshooting to resolve control system issues and minimize downtime.
  • Work collaboratively with team members with different backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Participates in Environmental, Health, & Safety initiatives as set forth by the company. Participates in and completes company-required training programs.

Minimum Education / Experience Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Instrument/Electrical Engineering or Process Control Related
  • 10+ years of related experience

Specific Skills and Knowledge

  • Must have a level of proficiency with Internet, Email, and Microsoft programs
  • 5+ years' experience in process control engineering in a petrochemical plant environment using distributed control systems.
  • Experience with Emerson DeltaV Preferred.
  • Experience in batch/sequence programming required.
  • Advanced controls and PLC experience preferred
  • Proficiency in industrial communication protocols, including but not limited to Modbus, Serial, Ethernet, Analog, HART, and OPC preferred.
  • Experience with Model Predictive Control (MPC), specifically using DeltaV PredictPro or Aspen DMC3, is highly desirable.
